3043 -4 I . . . selfe] Theobald (1726, p. 114) : <p. 114> “your self]] My Quarto Editions of 1637 [Q5] and 1703 [Q10], have a different Reading of this Passage, which is espoused too by Mr. Hughs, and which I take to comprehend the genuine Meaning of our Poet. ‘I lov’d your Father, and We love OUR self; And That, I hope, will &c.’ I’ll now give the Reasons for my being on this Side of the Question. Laertes is complaining, that (because the King durst not pursue Hamlet to Death for killing Polonius, but had only sent him out of the way;) he has lost a Father, and the Opportunity of being reveng’d on his Murtherer. The King bids Laertes not break his Sleep about the Want of his Revenge; for, says He, I lou’d your Father, and I loue my self; and both These are my Motives to That End. But how did the King’s Love of himself contribute to his Desire of Revenge on Hamlet? for thereon lies the Stress of the Alteration. Now there are two Speeches of the King in this very Scene, that perswade me to espouse this Reading, and believe it preferable to That of the Editor: For the King says expressly, that Hamlet had fought his Life too; and that he was not so unapprehensive of Danger, as to be negligent in defending himself from it.” </p. 114>

3043-4 I . . . selfe] Furness (ed. 1877): “Seymour (ii, 196), losing sight of the distinction here implied between the feelings of a man and those of a king, says that in the beginning of this speech the King seems to have forgotten the pompous dignity of his plural distinction.”
