[Settling this debate over a straw will cost more than two thousand lives. The arrogance of such a destructive undertaking comes from too much wealth and peace, which thus resemble a internally consuming ulcer.]

2743+19 debate] Deighton (ed. 1891): “decide by combat, cp. Luc. 1421, ‘It seem’d they would debate with angry swords’; the word is from the O. F. debatre, to beat down.”
1929 trav
trav: xref.
2743+19 Travers (ed. 1929): “Debate, fight to decide.—After straw (cp. ‘not worth a straw’), Q2 has no punctuation whatever; and the colon, or semicolon, generally adopted gives no indication of the tone. If it expresses half-credulous astonishment, will is emphatic (V.), and will not means it cannot be that they intend to. Stressed as usual, will not, here, apparently means will not be enough of the number of ‘souls’ and ‘ducats’ actually, or likely to be, engaged? Though arithmetic exactness is obviously not the point, the objection favours the proposal that [4.4.25-6 (2743+18-2743+19)], though metrically detached from [4.4.24 (2743+17)], should also be given to the Captain, from whom they would sound naturally, in every respect. In this connection, note the absence of (at least explicit) transition and the difference of ring (if not certainly of voice) between these two lines and [2.2.27 (2743+20)].”
