2633 what noyse] Fiebig (ed. 1857): “The folio reads: ‘Ham. Safely stow’d./Ros. etc. within. Hamlet! Lord Hamlet./Ham. What noise,’ etc. In the quartos, 1604, the speech stands thus: ‘Ham. Safely stow’d; but soft, what noise? Who calls on Hamlet?’ etc. Malone, whose text we have followed here, printed Hamlet’s speech unbroken, and inserted that of Rosencrantz, etc. from the folio, before the words, but soft, etc.”

2633 Safely] Travers (ed. 1929): “where one can hardly discover it, until I choose to tell. – To some such “antic” hide-and-seek (30) the grossly macabre earnest of the old story (Introd. p. vi) had, no doubt, been toned down already in the pre-Shakespearean play.”

2633 Safely stowd] Kittredge (ed. 1939): “Hamlet has not yet recovered from the excited mood in which we saw him at the very end of the preceding act. Hence the flippancy of his language.”

2633 Jenkins (ed. 1982): SD Calling within] “The words applied in F are evidently a play-house addition suggested by l.2, not part of Shakespeare’s text. Note that they replace Hamlet’s ‘But soft’, which they make redundant. Cf. n. [3.4.6 (2381)] and SB, xiii, 34-5.”

2633 Who. . . hamlet] Thompson & Taylor (ed. 2006): “F has ’Gentlemen within. Hamlet, Lord Hamlet’ after ’Safely stowed’, described by Jenkins as ’evidently a playhouse addition’. Hibbard thinks it is ’deliberately added to bring out the farcical element’.”
