2658-9 A thing . . . . nothing] Delius (ed. 1854): “Thing hat einen verächtlichen Nebensinn, unserm “Geschöpf” entsprechend, und so fasst Guildenstern das Wort auf, indem er den Hamlet unterbricht. A thing of nothing = ein Nichts oder ein Ding, das aus Nichts besteht, ist ein Sh.’s Zeitgenossen geläufiger Ausdruck.” [thing has a pejorative connotation corresponding to the German Geschöpf (creature), and Guildenstern understands the word this way as he interrupts Hamlet. A thing of nothing meaning a void or a thing that consists of nothing is an expression common among Sh’s contemporaries.]
