2432 {Ore} <Yea> this solidity and compound masse3.4.49

mWesley: contra warb, john
2432-4 Wesley (ms. notes in v1785): “(W. suggests ‘o’er this solidity’ and ‘and, as ‘gainst the doom.’ J. maintains the text.) Warburton’s note is here well ridiculed; but Johnson had done no harm by explaining the text as it now stands. I conceive no harm by explaining the text as it now stands. I conceive the sense to be ‘This solidity and compound mass (this firm body, the earth, composed of various parts) with tristful visage as against the doom (as in expectation of its dissolution is thought-sick at the act.’”

2432 this solidity . . . masse] Hudson (ed. 1872): “That is the Earth. Hamlet in his high-wrought stress of passion, kindling as he goes on, makes the fine climax, that not only the heavenly powers burn with indignation, but even the gross beings of this world are smitten with grief and horror, as if the day of judgment were at hand.

2432 solidity . . . masse] Clark and Wright (ed. 1872): “means the earth. Compare Tro. [1.3.85 (544)]: ‘The heavens themselves, the planets and this centre.’ In Sh’s conception the earth was an immoveable mass at the centre of the universe. See note on [2.2.158 (1190)].”

2432-34 Deighton (ed. 1891): “yea, even this solid earth, with gloom-struck face, as though expectant of the day of judgement, is sick at heart in beholding such a deed. Wordsworth refers, among other passages in the New Testament, to it. Peter, iii. 7-11, Revelations, xx. 11. For doom, cp. Mac. [2.3.77-78 (832-3)], ‘up, up, and see The great doom’s image!’”

2432-34 Ore this . . . the act] Wilson (ed. 1934): And this...the act] “Q2 ‘Ore this...the act,’ F1 ‘Yea this...masse With truthful visage . . . the act.’ Most edd. follow F1 which may give us Sh.’s own emendation; I attempt to restore his original text. Cf. note [1.3.74 (539)] and MSH. p. 327. The ‘compound mass’ I take to be the moon to which Hamlet points (cf. note [1.5.68 (657)] and [3.2.376 (2247)]. He is referring to some contemporary lunar eclipse; v. note [1.1.117-120 (124+10-124+13)], and cf. ‘as against the doom is thought-sick’ and ‘sick almost to doomsday with eclipse’ [1.1.120 (124+13)].”
