2301 Enter Polonius] Coleridge (ms. notes in Theobald, ed. 1773): “Polonius’s volunteer obtrusion of himself at this business while it is appropriate to his character still catching after power importance semwes [?] all likelihood that Hamlet should suspect his presence, and prevents us from making his death confine [?] Hamlet in our opinion.”
Transcribed by BWK. However, Coleridge (ms. notes 1819 in Ayscough, ed. 1807; rpt. Coleridge, 1998, 12.4: 854) has: “Polonius’s volunteer obtrusion of himself into this business while it is appropriate to his character still letching after former importance removes all likelihood that Hamlet should suspect his presence, and prevents us from making his death injure Hamlet in our opinion.” See Furness for alternative deciphering of ms. note.
