Nicholson: Hitherto Ros. and Guild. have so uniformly worked in common that the artistic management of the scene, as well as the fuller force thereby gained, demands that Hamlet’s request be addressed first to one and then to the other. Nor, though Guild. may or may not be the leader of the two, is Ros. silent; in fact, in the previous dialogue, Ros. is the one who is set before us as trying to get the wind of Ham. In this reply, therefore, let ‘Guil.’ be changed to Ros. [Probably these same reasons influenced the following emendation of Staunton, [3.2.355 (2226)]. Ed.]”
