1078 He . . . found] White (ed. 1861): “‘He tells me., my sweet Queen, that he,’ &c.:--So the folio;the 4tos., ‘my deere Gertrard,’ which smacks less of the honey-moon.”

1078 deere Gertrard] Elze (ed. 1882): “QB: my deere Gertrard he; FA: my sweet Queene, that he; om. QA. In QA this name is spelt Gertred (Gerterd, on p. 35 of Mr Griggs’ facsimile); in QB Gertrard; in FA Gertrude. The spelling of the Qq is no doubt owing to vulgar pronunciation and may be reckoned among the arguments from which it appears that the Qq were not printed from the poet’s own manuscript; that FA was not, is apparent from other reasons. — Gartred (Gertrude in Dodsley, ed. Hazlitt) is one of the characters in Greene’s Tu Quoque, a comedy which, though printed only in 1614, was most probably on the stage in the reign of Queen Elizabeth.”
