856-8 Seymour (1805, 2:163): “Again we meet, in the lines succeeding, two awkward hemistics that may yet be accommodated in the verse: ‘Ham. Swear by my sword, never to speak of this That you have heard to-night Ghost. — Swear by his sword.’”
His solution is to start with 857, and divide the lines thus: this . . . sword.

856-7 Van Dam (1924, p. 121) approves of the F1 transposition on dramatic grounds: an actor must have deemed it more effective to have the ghost repeat Hamlet’s words immediately after they were spoken. But Van Dam prefers the Q2 order because it allows him “to restore the blank verse” while “the F1 text does not.”

856 heard] Thompson & Taylor (ed. 2006): “Q1’s ’seene’ (as at [850]) is more logical, since Horatio and Marcellus have seen the Ghost but perhaps not heard it speak unless they have heard the repeated Swear from [845] (see [847 CN]).”
