Davies
2145 some must watch . . . sleepe] Davies (1784, pp. 93-4): some must laugh . . . weep] <p.93> “In the uttering of this line and a half, it was Garrick’s constant practice to pull out a white handkerchief, and, walking about the stage, to twirl it round with vehe- </p.93><p.94> mence. This action can incur no just censure, except from its constant repetition. He, of all the players I ever saw, gave the greatest variety to action and deportment; nor could I help wondering, that so great an artist should, in this instance, tie himself down to one particular mode, when his situation would admit of so many. The conforming to an uniform method of action makes the whole appear a lesson got by rote rather than the effort of genuine feeling.”
Davies’s quotation of line in connection with this comment, with weep rather than sleepe, may well be an error rather than an emendation.
