OED
143 showe] The OED “explains the origin of the spellings ’show’ and ’shew’ and remarks that the two spellings reflected different pronunciations originating in the Old English period and surviving (on the evidence of rhymes) down to about 1700; it observes that the ’shew’ spelling was prevalent in the eighteenth century and not uncommon in the first half of the nineteenth century; but it sheds no light on the distribution of these two spellings in Shakespeare’s day or on the distribution of the longer forms with a final ’e.’”
