427 Ham. What look’t he frowningly?1.2.231
1825 European Magazine
"Gunthio" pseudonym = Collier?
427-8 "Gunthio" (1825, pp. 343-2) remarks that Sh. like Homer nods at times, and he points out a discrepancy between what Horatio says in 428 and what he says at 78-9: that the ghost had looked as he had when he frownd in an angry parle.
Ed. note: It’s interesting, though, that Hamlet should think of his father’s frown.

427 Mull (ed. 1885): “The punctuation in all the copies [a rash statement and incorrect] is different from this. Some point it thus, ‘What! look’d he frowningly? others in this way, What, look’d he frowningly? The question sure is, ‘What was his aspect, was it frowningly?’ And so I have treated it.”

427 What] Jenkins (ed. 1982): “Not an exclamation, as the F punctuation, which eds. Invariably follow, might suggest. Hamlet is not taking up anything that has been said by introducing a new question. Either then a mere interrogative particle, as at 27, 30, 1004 (OED What A 21), or, better, What = How, as Q1 shows it to have been understood. See OED What A 20. Cf. Ant. 1.5.50 (F), ’What was he sad, or merry?’”

427 frowningly] Jenkins (ed. 1982): “i.e. with the mien appropriate to an armed warrior. See 78, and cf. MV 3.2.85, ’Hercules and frowning Mars’; Cym. 2.4.23, ’Julius Caesar . . . found their courage Worthy his frowning at.’”

427 What] Hibbard (ed. 1987): "How (OED A. 20). Compare [Rom. 1.5.55-6 (628-9)], ‘What dares the slave Come hither’; and especially ‘How look’t he, frowningly’, the reading of Q1. The reporter recalled the meaning, though not the exact wording."
