Abbott:
326 Visite] Abbott (§ 349) has a thorough discussion of the infinitive. Once the inflected ending -en or -an or, later, -e, was dropped and to was substituted, some confusion developed about the infinitive, and to was often dropped. Abbott specifically mentions visit as an example of a missing infinitive after the verb beteem, meaning suffer.
