283-9 tis a fault . . . be so] Foakes (1956, p. 35) mentions this speech as one of several that demonstrate the leisurely, mannered speech of the court, employed at times by almost all the characters, most affectedly by Osric: “It is a ’public’ manner of speaking. . . ”, and to Foakes, it is a measure of its dignity, which he explores in his essay as a whole—a contrast to its repressiveness and corruption.
