Robert Hapgood is Emeritus Professor of English, University of New Hampshire. He is the author of Shakespeare the Theatre-Poet (Oxford, 1988) named by Choice an "Outstanding Academic Book" and Shakespeare in Production: Hamlet (Cambridge, 1999. He has delivered scores of conference papers and published several dozen articles in journals and anthologies, as well as a number of theater reviews. He graduated with Highest Honors from Berkeley. where he received his MA and PhD degrees. He has taught at Indiana University, Dijon University, France, University of California, Berkeley. University of California, Riverside. Osaka and Shoin Universities, Japan and has directed study abroad programs at Cambridge University and at Regents College, London. He chaired the UNH English department. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he has been awarded ACLS, Mellon, and NEH fellowships and at UNH has received "Distinguished Professor" and "Lindberg Scholar/Teacher" awards. Most of his work has concerned Shakespeare in performance. Other scholarly interests include English and American drama generally, particularly 20th century, Noh and other classical dance drama as observed in Japan, Bali, Java, and India.
